Yonique loves entering a hospital room and seeing a smile on her patient’s face. She takes their vitals and cares for them in their time of need as though they were her own family. She is one of the latest students to graduate from the Communities In Schools of Houston nursing externship in partnership with Houston Methodist Hospital and Smithwood Medical Institute.

Under the eight-week program, high school graduates are mentored and supervised by registered nurses to earn a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification and an opportunity for a college scholarship and job placement. In addition to the 12-hour hospital shifts Monday through Friday, students take evening courses at Smithwood Medical Institute.

It was a challenge to get into the program and to push through the long days, but working with veteran nurses who appreciate my help and showed me the ropes made a huge difference. I love what I do.
