HOUSTON (March 31, 2023) – Communities In Schools Houston (CIS) hosted the “Stay in School” Gala on March 30th at the Post Oak Hotel, with 475 in attendance and raising $425,000. Chaired by Whitney and Marc Lawson and Lexi and Mike Marek, the event brought together corporate partners, community leaders, and supporters of CIS, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering at-risk students to stay in school and achieve in life.
Funds raised will support CIS of Houston's programs and services, including academic support, mentoring, mental health counseling, and basic needs assistance to more than 170,000 students at 173 schools in the Houston area.
Guests mixed and mingled at the lively cocktail reception outside the ballroom, enjoying libations and appetizers amid the vibrant décor with colors of the rainbow, or “ROYGBIV.” All primary and secondary colors were represented in guest attire, even with the gentlemen, including Astros orange and blue.
Emcee Lisa Malosky welcomed the crowd and introduced Rev. Matt Russell of Chapelwood United Methodist Church who gave the invocation and asked for a moment of silence for all Houston-area CIS students. She then introduced Board President Omar Reid who gave an update on how funds from the generous $13 million gift made by philanthropist MacKenzie Scott in 2022 will be used – Students, Staff and Sustainability.
The crowd then viewed a video celebrating 10 years of the CIS Mental Health Initiative. Following that, Malosky asked for a moment of silence for the Uvalde and Nashville families who have lost loved ones.
Additionally, “CIS Stages” allowed an opportunity for a mix of staff, students, and parents to come together to share how CIS has impacted their lives. The audience heard moving testimonials from elementary, middle and high school students, as well as CIS alumni and CIS Student Support Managers. One of the Northbrook High School seniors shared that she will attend Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City in the fall. She credited CIS Student Support Manager Martha Montoya Sanchez with helping her achieve academic and personal success.
Guests were then served a delicious meal of lobster and beef tenderloin. After the crème brulee dessert, the party moved to the dance floor to the music for the Austin-based ‘80s tribute band The Spazmatics. Even though it was a “school night,” many party-goers stayed late to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
"The Stay in School Gala is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together to support the education and future of Houston students who will benefit from the many services we offer, including mental health supports," said Lisa Descant, CIS of Houston’s Chief Executive Officer. "We are grateful for our supporters and partners who make our mission possible by ensuring all students stay in school and have the tools necessary to succeed."
